The abalone shell was traditionally used alongside smudge saje sticks to catch the hot cinders that fell away from the stick once it was burnt. The beautiful colors inside the shell is a reflection of the mother-of-pearl with the ocean bringing a strong, calming, healing energy.
Incorporating the abalone shell alongside the smudging ritual brings all four of the earth’s elements together. The shell represents water, the smoke air, the unlit sticks earth and smudge sticks lit represents fire. Having all four elements into the smudging ritual invites Mother Earth to be the focus, and transformations to happen.
